Welcoming a new child is a joyous, momentous BIG DEAL, and working parents deserve to feel supported and empowered before, during, and after parental leave.
Unfortunately, even in leading-edge ‘great place to work’ organizations, a typical parental leave is far from a net positive. Parents often feel stressed and unsupported, and are likely to report that their leave experience caused decreased engagement and long-term career harm… and their teams and organizations often experience conflict, decreased effectiveness, and organizational risk due to bungled (and often illegal) leave policy implementation.
